I stumbled upon affiliate marketing some 15 years ago and have never looked back, except for a 4-year hiatus, more to come on that later. At the heart, affiliate marketing is all about relationships.
I started in 2005 working part-time, cutting my teeth on affiliate recruitment, growing to manage a handful of lead generation and multichannel retailers including Mikasa, MyWinesDirect and Palm to name a few. A few years later I got the chance to help Jamie launch JEBCommerce where I helped in sales in addition to hiring and training our team while managed programs, including Elance (now Upwork), Doba and philosophy.com.
After a very successful start to my career, I wanted a chance to see the customer journey through the end of the buying cycle and landed in the car business in Internet Sales. What I didn’t expect to learn was how leads are handled by GMC, KIA, Porsche, Toyota and Subaru. Four years later, I missed affiliate marketing and it was time to jump back in.
Over the next four years I had the opportunity to work remotely for agencies in NY and then Victoria, BC. This was a great opportunity to hone my lead generation skills managing Audible.com, PRWeb, iContact, XOOM Energy and Red Roof Inn. When I had an opportunity to come back to JEBCommerce, I jumped and haven’t looked back.
Affiliate Marketing. With 15 years in digital marketing and the majority of time spent in affiliate marketing, I have a unique perspective having worked at 4 different agencies. This has allowed me to take some best practices from some stellar agencies in performance marketing. I enjoy speaking about everything from the basics of how to manage or launch a new affiliate program to the latest in compliance as it relates to the FTC and CCPA.
My dad used to say I would talk to a tree if it wouldn’t walk away. I guess you could say I enjoy talking, recently I spoke at an industry conference at Affiliate Summit West 2020. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and hope to do more speaking in the future.
Affiliate Summit West 2020
I recently had the opportunity to speak at one of the industry leading conferences, Affiliate Summit West 2020. This was a thrill to speak about ways to drive revenue without raising costs or publisher payouts. Often a challenge we face in managing programs is growing revenue and securing placements with little or no budget. You can read more about it in my recap.
I was honored to be on a panel with some industry heavy hitters, including: Ernie St. Gelais, Katy Atlas and Gary Kibel discussing the impact of the CCPA to publishers, networks, agencies/OPM’s as well as the legal implications.

Importance of Auditing Your Affiliate Program

“Stephen was the lead at JEBCommerce, our affiliate program partner, and was a wealth of knowledge. Me being new to affiliate management, he took his time to walk me through best practices as we partnered on a new strategy for a re-brand rollout. He was always responsive and always willing to go the extra mile. Also always a delight to talk to, hope I get to work with him again!”
Lisa Schaefer, Senior Marketing Manager Ecommerce, Paul Fredrick
“I had the pleasure of working with Stephen and starting up a brand-new program. He is organized and detail oriented, but never loses site of the big picture. He helped us quickly navigate obstacles and get our program up and going. He is always professional and efficient, but we can also share some laughs and is a lot of fun to work with on the day to day basis. I highly recommend him working with him for your marketing needs.”
Stephen Wheeler, Senior Manager, Business Development, NRG Energy
“For the last year and a half I have had nothing but a positive experience working with Stephen to grow Red Roof Inn’s affiliate program. Stephen is a very hardworking individual and dedicated to the projects he’s assigned. He kept Red Roof’s affiliate program on the right path by always bringing new suggestions and recommendations to the table on how we can make sure the program succeeds. He was always honest with his opinions on what would be best for the brand. Stephen’s skill set and work ethic are what made working with him so valuable for the past year and a half.”
